Xanti Schawinsky — Here Is a New Field for Your Imagination. Works 1924–1969
Galerie Gregor Staiger, Zurich presents Here Is a New Field for Your Imagination, an exhibition of works by Xanti Schawinsky spanning 1924 to 1969. The exhibition follows the development of his remarkably diverse practice, from the experimental spirit of the Bauhaus and his work with stage and performance to the process-based paintings of his later years. Across these different fields, Schawinsky repeatedly challenged the boundaries between painting, movement, space and the body.

XANTI SCHAWINSKY – Play, Life, Illusion
Presented at Mudam Luxembourg and subsequently at Kunsthalle Bielefeld, Play, Life, Illusion brought together more than 100 works spanning six decades of Schawinsky’s multidisciplinary practice, many shown publicly for the first time since the artist’s death in 1979. Moving from his Bauhaus and Black Mountain College experiments to his later process-based paintings, the exhibition traced his lifelong exploration of stage, image, movement and performance.
Organized in collaboration with the Estate of Xanti Schawinsky, it marked the first comprehensive retrospective of his work in Germany in more than 35 years.

A Retrospective in Texts, Letters and Images
Published by Hirmer Verlag, Play, Life, Illusion brings together autobiographical writings, letters and images spanning Xanti Schawinsky’s life and work. From the Bauhaus in Weimar and Dessau to Black Mountain College, the publication traces his development as an artist, designer, photographer and stage experimenter, offering a multifaceted view of a practice that consistently moved between disciplines.
